1. Lulu Bar & Restaurant
There’s no better place for a little midweek fun in the city than Lulu. Taking inspiration from the South Pacific and Aotearoa, the bustling Te Aro bar exudes the ambience of a lively island locale with high-spirited nightlights and Maori portraits.
The modern share plates are not to be missed – think Ika Mata fish salad and prawn toast for starters, and salted pork with jerk bbq sauce and spiced lamb shoulder for something heartier. If you’re here to party and only have time for nibbles, Lulu’s got you too. The mid-week $10 menu is high on our list of bang-for-the-buck deals. The night is always young in here, so sip slow from the list of tropical cocktails like caramelised pineapple Pina Colada and espresso-spiked Rumtini.

Although not exactly named after it, the bistro certainly nods to the delicious mutton bird, a real treat when it’s available.
A carefully curated wine list and inventive cocktails makes this a winner for both dinner and drinks. Adding character and a laidback, lounging vibe to the venue is the wide windows, split-level seating and eclectic furniture – a bit of Head Chef Amy Gilles’ past life as a furniture maker. The answer is clear when you get to know the time-honoured story behind this little eat and drink shop – one that began when the eponymous Auntie Mabel first brought her Myanmar recipes to the country back in the 70s. That heritage lives on in the beautiful and diverse dishes on Mabel’s menu today.
The Nga Gyi Kin is a must-order dish designed to impress, a whole grilled snapper that comes with a stellar dipping sauce and shrimp floss salad. You can’t leave without trying the Mohinga noodle soup that harks Myanmar national dish pride with fresh, herbaceous flavours. There’s so much to try here, so be glad that the menu – as it’s meant to be in the culture – is built in the spirit of communal dining. Mark this one down for a group event.
